AI answers now sit where people decide.

45%

of US consumers used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations in 2026. One year before, the number was 6%.

Source: BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, 1,002 US adults

88%

of 400 commercial keywords in banking, ecommerce and software showed a Google AI Overview in August 2026. In September 2025, the number was 45.75%.

When an AI tool gives one answer, it does not show a list of links. If the answer does not name you, people do not see you.

Why it matters

What AI search visibility does for your brand

AI search visibility is how often AI tools name and cite your brand. Here is what higher visibility gives you, with the research for each point.

  • Get seen when people stop clicking

AI summaries answer the question on the results page, so fewer people click a link. A brand that the answer names still gets seen.

Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025: people clicked a link on 8% of visits with an AI summary, and on 15% without one. 900 US adults.

  • Make your website the source

AI answers cite company websites more than other sources. Clear facts on your own site shape what the answer says about you.

Kumar, arXiv, June 18, 2026: about 78% of citations in more than 100,000 AI answers went to company websites.

  • Close the gap with larger brands

Niche brands start far behind global brands in AI answers. Each correct fact that you publish gives AI tools a reason to include you.

Same study: global brands appeared in 73% of answers, regional brands in 44%, and niche brands in 11%.

  • Get more citations from the pages you have

Headings, short sections and clear lists help AI engines lift your content. You can change the structure of your pages without new content.

Yu, Yang, Ding and Sato, arXiv, March 31, 2026: structure changes alone raised the citation rate by 17.3% across six AI engines.

  • Show up in the right city

AI answers change with the location of the person who asks. A local brand must check its visibility from the city of its customers.

Chen and Koudas, arXiv, October 16, 2026: 31,200 answers. ChatGPT changed its sources and recommended businesses by the city that the person gave.

  • Track a number, not a guess

AI citations change from month to month. A visibility baseline shows the citations that you win and the citations that you lose.

The Search Spot with Scrunch data, October 23, 2026: only 9.3% of pages that Google AI Mode cited in the summer kept the citation. 8 B2B software brands, 407 prompts.

How the lab works

Frontier research, strategy and tactics

We work at three levels. The research tells us what changes in AI search. The strategy tells you what to do first. The tactics let you do it today.

  1. 01 · Frontier research

We track AI models and new studies

LLM Watch follows the AI companies, their models, benchmarks and prices. We summarize each new study on AI search in plain words, with a link to the source.

  2. 02 · Strategy

    We turn findings into playbooks

Our playbooks show which work to do first, who does it and how to measure it. One is for marketing teams. One is for local business owners.

  3. 03 · Tactics

We build free tools you can use today

Each tool tests one tactic from the research. Run a tool on your own site, and you get a list of fixes in minutes.

Questions about A/GEO Research

Do you have a different question? Ask us.

What is A/GEO Research?

A/GEO Research is an applied research lab for AI search visibility. We study how AI answer engines find, trust and cite brands. We also track the AI models behind those engines. We publish what we learn as free tools, playbooks and insights.

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is how often AI tools name and cite your brand when people ask them for help. These tools include ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews. High visibility means more people hear your name before they search for it.

What does the lab research?

We study three areas. The first is how AI answer engines pick and cite sources. The second is the AI models behind those engines, with their benchmarks and prices. The third is the tactics that change what AI answers say about a brand.

Where do your research findings come from?

We read published studies, papers and data from AI companies and research teams. Each finding on our site links to its source and gives its date and sample. We also test tactics on our own website and tools, and we publish the results.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is work that makes your content easy for answer tools to read and quote. It includes clear question and answer content, structured data, and correct business facts. Answer tools include voice assistants, featured snippets and AI chat tools.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is work that makes AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini mention and recommend your brand. It focuses on the sources these tools read, such as your website, reviews, listings and articles about you.

How is AI search visibility different from SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) helps your pages rank in a list of links. AI search visibility helps AI tools pick your brand and name it in one answer. The two use the same base: a fast site, clear content and trusted mentions.

Can I cite or link to A/GEO Research?

Yes. Link to the page that has the finding, and name A/GEO Research as the source. When we summarize a study by another team, credit that team too. Our llms.txt file lists our main pages for AI tools.

Can A/GEO Research do the work for my business?

Yes. Our professional services apply the research to your website. Start with the $249 Starter Package for your home page. For ongoing work, hire a fractional AI Search & Content Growth Marketer for $5,000 per month.

Do you work with nonprofits?

Yes. Donors, volunteers and program clients also ask AI tools for help. Our research and tools apply to nonprofits too, and our services can make sure AI tools describe your mission and programs correctly.
